Penfriend Scheme

Any member of GirlGuiding aged 9 years and over can apply to our Penfriend Secretary for a penfriend in another country. A unit can also apply for a link with a unit from another country – this option is becoming more popular with the use of e-mail. Your regional events and international co-ordinator holds penfriend request forms. If it is easier for you, either write or email the penfriend secretary. Email info@girlguidingnz.org.nz for details.

Provide the National Penfriend Secretary with your name, address, age and the names of three countries where you would like a penfriend. Include a stamped, addressed envelope for reply if you are writing by post. If you are seeking a unit link rather than an individual penfriend, please also advise the unit name.

Friendship Badge

friendship badgeMany countries, including New Zealand, produce a special friendship badge. These badges are not worn by anyone in their own country – they are used as gifts to overseas GirlGuiding members – either when they are visiting New Zealand or when you are visiting their country. The badge can be ordered from the GirlGuiding New Zealand Mail Order Service.

The kotuku was selected for the New Zealand friendship badge to represent freedom and friendship between peoples. The kotuku is significant in Maori culture because it is believed that no person will die before they have seen the kotuku. In this way it signifies hope as well as freedom and friendship. The kotuku flies in the blue of Ranginui, above the green of Papatuanuku, representing this land.
